Fire isolator switch – a legal requirement says ESP

fireisolatorAccording to leading fire and security products supplier, ESP, there are still a lot of installers who are unaware that a fire isolator switch is a legal requirement with all new fire alarm systems being installed in the UK – coming under the BS539 Part 1 Standard.

ESP’s new BS5839 compliant Fire Isolator Switch securely isolates the mains supply feeding a fire system control panel and is crucial for fire system maintenance. The supply can only be isolated by an authorised person, using a key lock switch and switching is restricted by key operation. The key is removable in both ON and OFF positions and without the key, a tool would be required to disconnect power.

A neon indicator indicates mains present at the switched output. Bold red, durable casing ensures easy identification. The unit is supplied in a complete enclosure, which is of a standard single gang format with preformed holes for mounting on a surface or 20mm conduit box.

BS 5839 Part 1 Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings – Part 1: Code of practice for design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of systems in non-domestic premises – is published by the BSI.
