Dr Peter Boyce named Lux Person of the Year 2017

Dr Peter Boyce, editor of the lighting industry’s peer reviewed journal Lighting Research and Technology, has been named Lux Person of the Year 2017 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to lighting research.

Over a 50 year career in lighting research, Dr Boyce has become a world authority of the interaction of people and lighting. Author of the seminal work “Human Factors in Lighting” as well as numerous papers, article and book chapters, his insights have informed standards and practices for decades.

He is a Professor Emeritus at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, where he conducted research on visual performance, visual comfort, circadian effects, emergency lighting, perceptions of safety and lighting for driving.

Prior to that role, he word at the UK Electricity Council Research Centre, conducting research on visual fatigue, the influence of age on visual performance, visual problems associated with viewing computer screens, hue discrimination, safe lighting for emergency conditions and security lighting.

Dr Boyce is a Fellow both of the Society of Light and Lighting and of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America and in 2008 took up the editorship of the quarterly journal Lighting Research and Technology.

The Lux Awards, now in their seventh year, are designed to celebrate and reward excellence in both products and lighting applications. They are judged by a panel of leading lighting specialists and in the Lux Person of the Year the panel is rewarding someone who is making an outstanding contribution to the industry – in any form.

Society of Light and Lighting President Richard Caple welcomed the award: “It was most fitting to see Dr Peter Boyce receive the 2017 Lux Person of the year award. A person that has contributed so much to lighting and the lighting industry, not to mention the service that he has given to the SLL. A person that has influenced directly or indirectly most lighting people at some time or another. A highly worthy award winner.”
